LICE

LICE

Head lice are tiny, wingless insects that feed on human blood. They spread through close contact and by sharing belongings.

Symptoms of head lice include:

01
Itching
The most common symptom, caused by an allergic reaction to louse bites. Itching may not appear for up to six weeks after the first infestation.
02
Lice
Visible lice on the scalp.
03
Nits
Tiny white specks that look like eggs on the bottom of hair shafts. Nits are hard to see and may not cause itching at first.
04
Sores
Sores on the head, neck, or shoulders from scratching. Sores can become infected with bacteria.
05
Tickling
A tickling feeling or sensation of something moving in the hair.
06
Irritability and sleeplessness
These may be symptoms of head lice.
07
Small red bumps
Small, red bumps on the scalp, neck, or shoulders. Bumps may become crusty and ooze.

To check for head lice, use a wide-toothed comb to straighten the hair. Then, use a louse detection comb to look for lice and nits. Comb each section of hair several times, working from the crown to the ends.

Treatments

Medicated shampoos can help treat head lice, but lice can become resistant to some. Discuss with the doctor if you feel that you are unable to treat with over the counter products.

Prevention

Do not share clothing such as hats, scarves, coats, sports uniforms, hair ribbons, or barrettes. Do not share combs, brushes, or towels. Disinfest combs and brushes used by an infected person by soaking them in hot water (at least 130°F) for 5-10 minutes. Unfortunately, there is no proven head lice deterrent that will prevent your child from getting head lice again, but there is several ideas on the internet that could help
